California courts order life skills classes under several penal code sections. The most common is Penal Code 1203.097, which governs probation conditions for domestic violence convictions and related offenses. Under PC 1203.097, the court may order a batterer's intervention program (BIP) or life skills depending on the specific charges and circumstances.
For non-DV offenses such as assault (PC 240/245), battery (PC 242), criminal threats (PC 422), and disturbing the peace (PC 415), California courts routinely order life skills classes ranging from 4 to 52 hours. The duration is at the judge's discretion and depends on the severity of the offense, prior criminal history, and the specific county's sentencing guidelines.
Important: If your court order specifically requires a 52-week Batterer's Intervention Program (BIP) under PC 1203.097, a general life skills class may not satisfy that requirement. BIPs are state-certified programs with specific curriculum and group session requirements.
