Georgia Court-Ordered Anger Management Requirements

Georgia courts order anger management under the Official Code of Georgia Annotated (OCGA). Common charges include Battery (OCGA ยง16-5-23.1), Simple Assault (OCGA ยง16-5-20), Aggravated Assault (OCGA ยง16-5-21), and Family Violence Battery (OCGA ยง16-5-23.1). Anger management is frequently ordered as a condition of probation or as part of a First Offender plea.

Georgia has 159 counties โ€” more than any state except Texas. Each county's court system may have specific local practices, but anger management requirements are set by OCGA statewide. Georgia's Family Violence Act addresses DV-specific sentencing.

Under Georgia's First Offender Act (OCGA ยง42-8-60), eligible first-time offenders can have charges dismissed upon successful completion of probation, which often includes anger management.

Georgia Laws That Commonly Require Anger Management

OCGA ยง16-5-23.1 โ€” Battery / Family Violence Battery

Misdemeanor. Courts commonly order 8-16 hours. Family violence battery may require additional DV intervention.

OCGA ยง16-5-20 โ€” Simple Assault

Misdemeanor. Courts typically order 4-12 hours of anger management.

OCGA ยง16-5-21 โ€” Aggravated Assault

Felony (1-20 years). Courts may order 16-52 hours as part of probation.

OCGA ยง42-8-60 โ€” First Offender Act

Anger management is frequently required as a condition for first offender treatment.
